I’m all for a good deep house clean, and in our house this usually comes around twice a year.  Our big spring cleaning was in May when we moved, so it was about time to bite the bullet and start a winter purge. Most times during the deep cleaning process, things seem to get way worse before they get any better. I pull out all furniture, and pull up all rugs, dust, sweep, mop, and finally, rearrange. Rearranging is key, adds a fresh energy to our space, and lets us figure out more efficient ways of storage. This time it was; wire baskets that slide in and out under our entrance way bench that store small accessories perfectly, and a  hook to hang our large wicker laundry basket near the ceiling because its bulky and awkwardly shaped. I purchased a couple of fur throws (one for the bed, one for the metal chair) for a more cozy, and less harsh feel thats ideal for the winter months. Throw pillows are probably the easiest way to instantly spruce up any room. Written mantras like this “Good Vibes” pillow from Urban, perpetuate the words they display.  I love the feel of a minimalistic design, although my tendency is to collect odd and ends, knick knacks, trinkets, coins, shells, flowers (you name it) that end up in the form of multiple “altars” around the house. I have to force myself to throw things out, re-purpose them, or give them away. I’ve vowed to keep one small side table in the house where I can display those items, and keep them contained in one area. I’ve also adopted a “one in one out” policy for clothes. This has worked out rather well for my wardrobe, pairing down my closet and compelling me to buy only staple items that are classic and durable. In the vein of minimalism, my color story (or lack thereof) usually consists of white, black, and pops of metallics, along with hanging plants, or table top succulents. Any earthen items such as crystals as well as hanging plants or tabletop succulents brighten the space and naturally clean the air, while providing an organic and inviting vibe.

It was such a blast shooting with Free People for the Indigo Shop a few weeks back. A dreamy Malibu at sunset was a picturesque backdrop for the tonal blue/denim/neutral pieces. The amazing Amanda Julca captured the scenes beautifully, utilizing the sea spray and naturally occurring orbs of light that helped grasp the feeling of that moment, and freeze them in a photograph. I felt honored to have been included in a shoot showcasing the natural beauty of my new home here in Southern California, not to mention with a company whom I’ve loved for years. After the shoot was done, I paused a moment  to take in the sunset and be quiet for a bit. I got little emotional while I internalized that I was in a place I’ve always wanted to be, and a part of something truly creative (not to mention fully powered by a team of incredible Women). It was a day that allowed me to acknowledge and appreciate that I’m on the right path, and that there are a few angels up there steering me in the right direction.

Has it really been a year??? When Coachella rolls around I’m always astonished at how fast time goes by. We’ve been in LA for a year now. Crazy. Apparently there have been a few upgrades this year like actual bathrooms, and a new app that includes a “friend finder” as well as a way to organize set times. Coachella is obviously a music festival, but its equally about the fashion. I always seem to opt for the biker-chic look, which includes boots, that for me, are a crucial part of survival. Pair with a comfy pair of cut-offs, and add the fancy/girly on top with a cutout crop that has sexy tie details. Every girl wants to look good, but don’t let your appearance take over the whole weekend, if you plan ahead, you wont have to focus on that. Remember, it’s all about the dancing, frolicking, ferris wheel rides, and only a little about taking pictures. Check out last years style post here, and a Festival Vest DIY here, and stay tuned for an upcoming Festival Survival Guide on Thursday…

Wild Heart Vegan Hobo– Free People | Oh Valencia Caftan-Free People | Metal Cones-Crazy Crow | Buckskin-Similar Here | Concho-Similar Here

Festival season is upon us and I’ve definitely been noticing the influx of new accessory trends. Leather is big, and edgy is taking over the bohemian vibe. Harnesses, Bolo’s, Chained Belts, and of course, fringe. It’s biker chic and I dig it. I was inspired by all of the concho’s and fringe that I’ve been seeing and decided to crate a hybrid purse bolo. Once you have the supplies, this guy takes about 15 minutes to make…tops. It adds jingle and flair to any handbag. Tips for this project: Match your piece of leather as closely to your bag as possible (grain/color). You also must have a bag that had detachable/adjustable straps unless you want to build your bolo around the strap…convertible crossbody’s are perfect for this!

Materials:

Leather of your choice (I used buckskin, you can opt for a vegan leather though)
Metal Cones
Concho Charm
Scissors
Jewelry pliers with smooth finish (no crimps) for clamping cones

Directions:

Smooth out your leather and measure the piece to whatever length you want, making sure the width of the cut will fit when threaded through the concho. Cut the piece making sure you completely close the scissors when cutting, meaning the end of the scissors come together completely (this will prevent the leather from fraying). Once you have your ribbon of leather, fold it in half on itself making sure the ends line up, and thread through the concho. Once you have the concho in place, cut the fringe from the bottom of the ribbon, using the same technique with the scissors. Make sure the fringe is the correct width for insertion in the metal cones, no too thin, not too thick. Once all fringe is cut, thread the cones onto each piece of fringe rolling the leather in between your fingers of one hand, and twisting the cone onto said fringe with your other hand. Thread all cones before crimping, so you can line up the cones evenly. Make sure the edge of the fringe is not sticking out of the bottom of the cone, if so just slightly pull cones down so they are even again. Using the pliers, gently crimp the top of the cone where the leather meets the cone. Do this on all pieces and voila!

Giveaway: Herbivore Botanicals

Lapis | Orchid | Phoenix | Facial Oils-Herbivore Botanicals

▼▼▼▼

We love us some Herbivore Botanicals. This small company based out of Seattle has grown leaps and bounds since our giveaway with them a year ago. It’s been fun to watch them grow within the URBN community, as they are now carried at two of our four stores (Free People, and Urban Outfitters). Whats so great about these facial oils you ask? Lets talk about Concentrated Moisture. In contrast to traditional cream moisturizers and lotions which tend to be high in water and emulsifying agents but low in effective ingredients HB’s facial oils contain no fillers and are formulated with only effective natural ingredients. They absorb easily to get moisture, vitamins, fatty acids and antioxidants into your skin. Oh yeah, and everything from Herbivore Botanicals is  100% Natural. Everything they create contains absolutely no artificial ingredients, fillers, parabens, alcohol, animal ingredients, fragrances, sulfates, artificial colors, or unnatural preservatives. These facial oils contain oils that are cold pressed or steam distilled. Only the best! A rundown of each oil type:

After the slew of shows we’ve been to lately (Blood Orange, Sbtrkt, Banks, Ivory Deville) I’ve realized there really is an art to concert going attire. Im not claiming to be an expert, but have been to enough to hold my own, and aim to share a few tips to make your experience easier. The main goal is comfort, body temperature control, easy access, and of course, style. The number one tip that I’ve found helpful is a small purse…messenger style. It sucks to be dancing around with a huge bag on your hip, and it’s not very considerate of your fellow show goers (I’m probably annoying enough being THAT GIRL who is dancing uncontrollably, hands over head for the entire night). This fringed Cleobella number does the trick, and the black leather totally overlaps into everday wear. While were on the subject of fringe, these suede Seychelles booties are comfortable enough to dance all night in, and at $150, they don’t break the bank. I’m loving a crop top layered over a body chain…thanks for that idea Bey. Add a 90’s inspired collar for an eclectic accessorized look. Pile on the rings, especially this set from House of Harlow, and to keep the pops of silver going finish with Nars metallic nail polish. Crimp-free hairties are a must for a ponytail option, plus they and add to wrist stacks when not in use. These python print ties that I found at Nordstrom are rad. As far as touchup essentials, go with what fits in your purse. A few key items like face refresher spray (try the mini size from MAC…they now have mini sized everything!!!), eyeliner, and the obligatory Sin-Min horchata lipspread (has a natural plumper which makes your lips full and soft) are minimal but keep you looking fresh.  When in doubt choose most anything with fringe or distressed detailing and you’ll be good to go.

Vacation is on the horizon…I leave for a week in Colorado this Saturday. Summer Red Rocks shows are calling my name. Flume, Cut Copy Chromeo=dancing all night. I just have to get through this week. Coachella, anyone? Outfit guides for any festival or concert of the season… my favorite season. In my experience, whether is mud-chella, rain-chella, or 101 degree-chella (two years ago) comfort is key ladies. You can’t go wrong with a pair of cutoff shorts, broken in ankle booties and a lacey crop. Or, for a chillier day, some awesome crushed-velvet bell bottoms paired with a distressed tank. Oversized sunglasses are a must, and really you cant go wrong with anything from Free People. Wanna get more creative? Try my Besti Festi Vestie D.I.Y. from last summer. What are you waiting for??? Get out there and dance your ass off!
