“Listen to the hummingbird
Whose wings you cannot see
Listen to the hummingbird
Don’t listen to me.

Listen to the butterfly
Whose days but number three
Listen to the butterfly
Don’t listen to me.

Listen to the mind of God
Which doesn’t need to be
Listen to the mind of God
Don’t listen to me.”

FKJ2

▼▼▼▼

I flew to Colorado two weeks ago to surprise one of my best friends on the night of her engagement. What followed was a mountain weekend filled with champagne, dance parties, family dinners, and a gaggle of giddy girls waiting for their turn to try on the ring. Of course there is a soundtrack to our lives, and for a weekend like this, it’s a continual music share-a-thon. On the drive home it was my turn to plug in Spotify and update a couple of music hungry homies on my recent faves playlist. A few top artists on the current rotation include; DimSum, Blood Orange, and newest obsession, French Kiwi Juice. Yes, there is a trend here-bands with food related titles, Alex noted. If you are a foodie, or music lover alike, try a taste of FKJ. A dreaded (the hair kind) French DJ delivering deliciously juicy tracks.

Midnight Magic

If you’re looking for an All Hallows Eve party playlist, look no further than Midnight Magic’s new album “Midnight Creepers.” With a steady bassline and groovy piano, the track “Beam Me Up” might just do, well that.  The group, originating in Brooklyn, definitely live up to their name, I’d classify it as funky-disco-ghoul. Oh, and their opening up for Holy Ghost tonight at the Bluebird, so that might be fun too…

Lord Huron and alt-J

On my last of the three-in-one-month Denver trips, I was lucky enough to be invited day of, to the sold out Lord Huron and alt-J show. My friend Ty was shooting them for Listen Up Denver, so I jumped at the opportunity. Having seen alt-J at Coachella, but never Lord Huron I was stoked to say the least hoping “Time to Run” and my favorite, “She Lit a Fire” were on their set list. Lord Huron opened the show amidst a sunset backdrop silhouetted with dark mountains, setting the stage for their dreamy folk rhythms. Both of my song wishes were included, and the band’s joyous energy was seamlessly translated to the crowd. When lead singer Ben Schneider tripped over a power cord and kept playing, the crowd and band shared in a roar of laughter and smiles, a perfect example of the communal performer/audience experience that this show particularly encompassed. I was already satisfied when Lord Huron exited the stage and made way for the main act. alt-J came on to a sufficiently warmed up crowd, playing every song, (having only one album under their belt) stopping only intermittently during “Something Good” to let the crowd participate and scream out “Get high” on each chorus.

Read Ty’s take here, and check out his photography page here to see more amazing photos of live music in Colorado including Local Natives, Buddy Guy, Father John Misty and more

Flume

New-Navy-Zimbabwe-Flume-Remix

“Leaving city for an open highway
Or the planet for a clear blue sky way
Oh it’s hour good.”

What can I say? I love Flume. The remix of New Navy’s, Zimbabwe is it. A slowed down version of an original “Two-Door-Cinema-Club-esque” track. Adding it to the “After Midnight” playlist, sexy.

Totally infectious, funky, retro, dance music. Im obsessed with Roosevelt. Listen to the above track, “Elliot.”  If it doesn’t make you want to get up, strap on your roller skates, and boogie, there may be something wrong with you. #turnitup

Three of my top musical acts all within a one-month span…yes. Two I have seen, and didn’t disappoint to say the least, and the other I get to see with one of my favorite night owls in crime (you know who you are). Music, friends, and ROADTRIPS!!! It doesn’t get much better than that. Posts on these shows soon.

There are some pretty interesting people around here,  and coincidentally, their garage sales yield some pretty interesting stuff.  As with most things in life you get what you put in, so the more you venture out to these advertised yard/garage/junk sales, the more your efforts will come to frution. These three gems cost, in total, 6 dollars. That’s about the third of a cost of one single vinyl from Urban. SCORE.

*Lookout out for an upcoming “Listening Party” post
