Portland Bound

We are Portland bound, about 10 of my girlfriend’s and I that is. We’ve got a few fun dinners, a hike, and wine tasting on the agenda for this Pacific Northwest trip, to celebrate Ash’s 30th birthday in style. Although I’ve visited Seattle a few times, I haven’t had the pleasure of exploring Portland yet, and am excited to eat my way through this scenic city. Follow the trip on Instagram: @halleys_comet

Luxe or less: Mules

Mules are Spring’s it shoe, half-bootie, half-heel, all awesome. A French word, “mule” describes a style of shoe that is backless and sometimes, but not always closed-toed. Mules are great transitional footwear that show off the ankle, while still reserving an option of a closed or open-toe, depending on the weather. 90’s are back in full swing with these Clueless inspired heeled open-toed beauties. They look rad (and Cher approved) paired with dresses or skirts, but I love them when styled with boyfriend denim, which usually needs a splash of femininity. *Note* These probably won’t help your freeway driving skills. Point-toed usually look a bit dressier to me, so for a day at the office or dinner date, these are your best bet. Closed-toed bootie mules are comfortable, and perfect for running around town paired with your fave skinny jeans, but can also be dressed up with a floral dress and leather jacket for a concert or dinner with friends.

A few of my tried and true favorites that are used on the reg. Most of these items (6 of 8) I’ve used for over a year (many for years) and can vouch for their awesomeness in the durability sense. In order of appearance: First off, if you haven’t smelled this Arugula scented candle, you are misisng out on a delicious trip for the senses. Trust me on this one, I worked at Anthropologie (the mecca for candle sales if you aren’t an Anthro regular) for two-plus years, and smelled every candle on God’s green earth. This one is it. If you arent a candle burner, this one will convert you. Its not sugary, or fruity, or musky, it’s light and clean and amazing. Plus it burns evenly and for what seems like forever, as well as cleanly, because its soy. We have other items to asses, so I digress from the candle. A pair of oversized black sunglasses is a must for every gal. Whether it’s driving into the sun, looking glamorous, or if you’re just plain hungover, these Karen Walker lovlies will do the trick. caulifolwerkale crunch 1kale crunch 2kale crunch 3kale crunch 4kale crunch 5

We visited Erewhon Natural Foods Market in West Hollywood for some grocery shopping and lunch last week. The only thing I can describe it as being close to, is Peck Market in Milan…and we left obsessed. Erewhon sells only the “purest, ethically and sustainably produced foods, wellness and beauty products, and household items” most of which is packaged in glass jars, and has a pretty hip juice bar as well (you actually sit down and order shots/drinks that are juiced right in fornt of you). We sampled a few of their pre-made items from the deli and loved the cauliflower crunch salad, so we made sure to list the ingredients in order to recreate it at home. Here is our attempt…it’s pretty damn good!

Ingredients:

Cauliflower (1/2 head)
Kale (1/2 head)
Garbanzo Beans (1 cup)

1 cup diced each, of the following:

Yellow Bell Pepper
Orange Bell Pepper
Celery
Cucumber
Sweet Peas
Red Onion
Green Olives

Vinaigrette:

Olive Oil (1/3 cup)
Hemp Oil (1/4 cup)
Lemon Juice (1/3 cup)
Garlic-diced (6 toes)
Dijon Mustard (2 tsp)

Directions:

Wash and dice everything except garbanzo beans. Combine together in a large mixing bowl. In the mixing cup attachment of an immersion blender, combine all vinaigrette ingredients. Pulse together, then steadily blend, until creamy and frothy. Pour over vegetables and fold in to mix.

Coachella, anyone? Outfit guides for any festival or concert of the season… my favorite season. In my experience, whether is mud-chella, rain-chella, or 101 degree-chella (two years ago) comfort is key ladies. You can’t go wrong with a pair of cutoff shorts, broken in ankle booties and a lacey crop. Or, for a chillier day, some awesome crushed-velvet bell bottoms paired with a distressed tank. Oversized sunglasses are a must, and really you cant go wrong with anything from Free People. Wanna get more creative? Try my Besti Festi Vestie D.I.Y. from last summer. What are you waiting for??? Get out there and dance your ass off!

lemonade2
lemondae 3lemondae 4lemonade 6

 ▼▼▼▼

I noticed this week that the three most plentiful things at the market (and at our house) were; tons of organic juicy strawberries (3 square containers for $10 at the farmers market), big bright yellow lemons, and two rosemary bushes in the courtyard, so naturally lemonade came to mind. The rosemary adds a beautiful herbal flavor and aroma to the drink, and makes it a bit more interesting than regular lemonade. Crushing the rosemary between a wooden board and wooden spoon is the secret, and slowly releases all of the oils into the beverage.

Ingredients:

Lemons (7 juiced/about one cup lemon juice)
Strawberries (fresh-3/4 cup sliced)
Rosemary
Agave (1/4 cup)

Directions:

Rinse strawberries and rosemary, put rosemary aside. Slice strawberries and drop into the bottom of whatever pitcher you have chosen. Juice lemons, by cutting each one in half, and inserting a fork into the center of each half, twisting as you juice (I find this is the easiest and juiciest way). Strain and discard seeds. Stir agave and lemon juice together, add to strawberries. Add in 5 cups water and gently stir. Place rosemary on your cutting board and with a wooden spoon, press down and roll. Push rosemary stems down into lemoande and serve.

**This beverage only gets better with time, overnight is even better

***Add some vodka or gin for a refreshing cocktail

Coconut Grove Matte Eyeshadow-Nars // Sugar Petal Lip Treatment-Fresh // Layer Lash Primer-Smashbox

▼▼▼▼

Products that deliver two uses from one purchase, cutting down makeup cost and clutter. Nars’ Coconut Grove is my new go-to for lids and brows. The sumptuous brown can be applied lightly in the crease for the daytime, or layered with a wet brush for a darker sultry night look. Use an angled brush like this one, with short strokes working outward to blend into your brows (I use this for my eyeliner brush as well…oh hey double duty brush!). I’ve already raved about Fresh’s “Sugar” lip treatment (here and here), but its not just for lips, it acts as a creme blush too. Just three dabs along your cheekbone smudged in a bit, and presto, rosy cheeks. Perfect to keep in your purse to re-up on your lip or cheek color. My friend recently introduced me to what became an instant obsession, Smashbox’s lash primer. Use before mascara to lengthen and separate, AND on your brows after you have brushed color into them… It acts as a wax keeping hairs perfectly in place.
