Best of 2013

NYE

▼▼▼▼

Its been an awesome year. Lots of travel (Costa Rica, L.A., Palm Springs, Moab, Baja), concerts to remember (Coachella, Envision Festival, Groundation, The XX, Steve Earle, Pretty Lights, Empire of the Sun), meals to remember (Uchi, Cafe Bar, Rustic Canyon, Old Major, A.O.C., Eolus), two weddings (Holcombs, Farthings), and one baby announcement…cant wait for little Lysander!  Spending the holidays at home in Taos was the icing on the cake. Friends, family, good food, good music. Thats what its all about right? So here, I’ve compiled a list of my most listened to songs of 2013. Unfortunately, the weather has caught up with us and everyone in the house is sick, so tonight we’ll be laying low and having a movie marathon. The only champagne going on around here is this candle…but Im sure there will be plenty of room for celebration in the days to come. Cheers friends, and remember in the new year to- Go for the Gusto!

Color Study: Radiant Orchid

radiant orchid opener ORCHIDFINALpantoneorchid2

Amethyst Necklace-Angle Diamond Dot, Interior Satin Paint-Valspar, Caviar Stick Eye Colour-Laura Mercier, Anti-Aging Hand Cream-Davines, Flash Drive-Pantone, Lavender Whip Lipstick-Mac, Cremesheen Lipglass in Narcissus-Mac, iPhone Case-Pantone, Molly Coddled Nail Polish-RGB

What is more appropriate for a color study, than newly released color of the year from Pantone, “Radiant Orchid.” What is Pantone? you ask, well they are the self proclaimed experts on the measurement of color. Pantone is known for inventing the PMS- Pantone Matching System, which uses numerical coding for recognizing color. Pantone describes 2014’s color as “An enchanting harmony of fuchsia, purple and pink undertones, Radiant Orchid inspires confidence and emanates great joy, love and health. It is a captivating purple, one that draws you in with its beguiling charm.” Honestly, it seems a little dramatic to me, but who am I to judge a color. Maybe it’s the fact that pastels are used with frugality in my wardrobe, only surfacing in traces (usually in an accessory), but Im having real trouble figuring out the actual color. A blend of lilac/lavender/rose magenta, but even the products listed on the Pantone web page don’t match. As of now it seems that radiant orchid, should have been 2013’s color of the year, seeing as lilac locks, lips, and confections were popping up all over my social media feed (heck I even dyed my tips this color). Color of the year? Or, color of last year? You decide. The new year is fast approaching, and maybe I should resolve to add new color influence to my closet, but why mess with a good thing? I think I’ll stick to the darker hues for now.

D.I.Y. Foraged and Recycled Gift Wrap

Forage: To wander in search of provisions

Recycle: To recondition and adapt to a new use or function

Every year I set out to create a theme for my holiday wrapping. Sadly, the holidays now seem surrounded by so much consumerism and waste, I decided to try and make everything as sustainable as possible this season. We save our cardboard boxes and brown paper bags, so I used those instead of buying gift boxes/bags. I found some great 100% recycled brown wrapping paper from Crate and Barrel, and at $15.95 for a generous 300 feet of paper, knew it would be more than enough for all of our family’s gifts. The rustic wood gift tags are re-purposed scraps from timber processing factories, and are so much more beautiful than those tacky santa stickers. For the moss, we took our dog for a walk in the woods and gathered different shades of green from the trees, stopping to pick up some fallen pine branches that we added to the mix.  Even a small amount of consciousness about what we buy, and try not to buy, helps this beautiful planet that we are lucky to live on.

Tonight’s the night where millions of Americans tune in to watch the Victorias Secret Fashion Show, a theatrical parade of women in their underwear. In honor of this day, I would like to share some non-sparkly, non-pink, skivvies that have caught my eye lately. For Love and Lemons a rad clothing line created by fellow Buff, Gillian Mahin and her best friend Laura Hall, has released it’s first season of lingerie. Sophisticated, strappy, under things reminiscent of European lingerie, but with a bit of fun thrown in (see the papillon bralette). P.S. the longline bralette looks amazing under a little black dress, and adds a touch of intrigue to a black silk tank. P.S.S. I love to use Soak Wash’s Lacey Lingerie Wash for all of my delicates.

Gift Guide: Stocking Stuffers

Stocking stuffers are my favorite part of Christmas morning. Fun little gifts packed in along side an array of different candies (chocolate orange is a must!) are personally, much more exciting than the bigger items. I loved receiving different beauty items (nail polish, chapstick, etc) as well as nick nacks, and would always save my stocking for last. Here are a few ideas for the older stocking owner on your list. Most are affordable, coming in under $25. You can never go wrong with a mini candle, these are great for travel, bathroom, and office. A roller ball of your loved ones favorite fragrance is perfect for purse and car, or try a new scent to avoid buying a full bottle of something they may not love. Whiskey rocks are a great Dad gift, and don’t necessarily have to be used for alcoholic beverages. This Deborah Lippmann mini gift set is so cute for the jetsetter girlfriend (and when the polish is all used up, they can re-purpose the bag for jewelry, change, etc). With awesome scents like bergamot body cleanser and cilantro conditioner, this Malin and Goetz 1oz essential kit is ideal for a man on the go, and fits snugly in a standard sized dopp kit (see guys gift guide). “Coal” gum is a funny addition, and can even be used as a hint. Get creative with your stuffers, and have some fun shopping for gifts this year!

Most are Southwestern in influence, and all are beautiful. We are giving away two of her hand stamped Moleskine notebooks today.
